For the first time in years, it was warm at Wonderwool with no need for many layers of clothing. The first day was absolutely cracking but the Sunday was very disappointing, hey ho! We stayed in a barn conversion, Swallow Barn, perched on the side of a hill with great views over the valley.

This week is all about catching up, marvelling at the hot weather and getting ready for the alpaca halter classes at the North Somerset Show on Monday. Let’s hope the black and brown intermediate girls don’t do the ‘dropped lip irritable number’ pictured, in front of the judge.

The previous week middle son Alex and his two sons arrived for an Easter holiday break. We went to Peppercombe beach in North Devon which is always pretty empty as it is 6.4 km walk there and back. I have a wonky knee and, of course, forgot my walking pole, so when we got there the knee refused to cooperate and Alex had to help me down the last steps to the beach.

The waterfall from the cliff to the beach was roaring, a joy for two small boys, who actually remained remarkably dry. They ate all the lunch rolls and moved on to the ‘emergency rations’ so we were left with just jelly babies as the bribe to keep them tramping back up the hill. Very good going, I thought for a five-year-old and a seven-year-old and of course the seventy five-year-old me.
