Fully recovered now from a Devon County Show that was really hot without a drop of rain, that’s a first. Sadly there were no competitive alpaca classes this year as the show managers would not give us a marquee big enough to house enough alpacas for a three day show. This comes after decades of alpaca showing at Devon with a big enough marquee!
We were very fed up and instead agreed to mount a display with just five alpaca breeders present and sixteen alpacas instead of the usual 160 animals.
We made BBC Spotlight when one of our number Lakemoor Alpacas staged an alpaca café twice a day where four alpacas hoovered up carrot sticks offered by the public. No food for humans, health and safety and all that. Spotlight presenter Victoria Graham got the greediest white boy, who post café, lay down in the pen and snored.
I got some new hens the other day who decided it would be a really good idea to fly over a ten foot fence and roost in the trees. After some head scratching I decided to starve them for a day and they shot into the hen house when offered mixed corn. Gotcha! We had to clip their wings, no more flying for them.
It has been a very dry spring but our grass is doing well as, being Devon, we’ve had a couple of days of decent rain. Plenty of grass for these weanling boys.
