We’ve completed most of the pressing alpaca work. The young crias have been shorn and had the majority of their jabs. We’ve been busy re-breeding the girls who have cria at foot and got going with eighteen maiden females born in 2023.
It hasn’t been easy as the very hot weather has not been great for the males’ sperm count but finally, we have reached the time when we can scan them and see the tiny embryo. It is an eleven-and-a-half-month gestation so we really want to get it right.
All our yarns are spun from fleeces of alpacas farmed here in the UK. Our barn is filling fast, thanks to Chas – our very own white van man – collecting fleeces from farms across the country, alongside deliveries arriving daily.
Each fleece is carefully graded by colour (white, fawn, brown, black and grey) and by softness, from the finest baby alpaca to superfine. Nothing is wasted, even the coarser fibres unsuitable for our knitting yarns are transformed into luxurious duvets and pillows. Every fleece has a purpose.
